Uvalde wins Little League tournament opener, 25-6 - Uvalde Leader-News

The Uvalde 10-12 All-Stars scored six runs in each of the first two innings last Sunday evening and rolled to a 25-6 victory over Devine in their opening softball game of the Little League District 21 tournament at Freddy Avalos Field.

It was a tough night for Devine pitchers, who struggled to throw strikes.

The Uvalde girls feasted on 19 walks and four hit batters, but they also came up with some big hits.

Esmy Maldonado hit a three-run triple in the second inning.

Jocelyn Rodriguez ripped a three-run double and two-run single in the fourth inning.

Sydney Schrutka singled twice and doubled.

Amarii Pilgrim was the winning pitcher. He allowed one hit, walked five, and recorded seven strikeouts.

With the win, the Uvalde All-Stars will not play again until next Sunday.

The Uvaldeans will face the winner tonight’s game between Natalia and Pleasanton in a winner’s bracket showdown set for an 11 a.m. start on Sunday.

Uvalde boys win

The Uvalde 10-12 All-Stars gained a berth in the district baseball tourney title championship as they downed the Hondo All-Stars, 8-6, Tuesday night at Kiwanis Field.

Today at 7 p.m., they will face the winner of last night’s elimination game between Hondo and Jourdanton. If the Uvaldeans win, they are the district champions. If they lose, an additional game will be played at 7 p.m. Friday to determine the winner.

With the score knotted at 3-3, Uvalde scored five times Tuesday in the fourth inning. 

Ryan Zamora topped off the inning with a run-scoring triple. Ryan Aguero hit a run-scoring single. Zamora, the winning pitcher, struck out 10 batters. He gave up only three hits. Jaad Aguilera pitched two innings in relief.

In tourney action last Sunday, the Uvalde All-Stars beat the Pleasanton All-Stars in a 14-6 thriller.

Ryan Zamora hit a home run for Uvalde.

Other results

Uvalde’s 8-10 All-Stars were eliminated from baseball tourney play Monday as they lost an 11-10 decision to Hondo.

Last Sunday, they lost a 12-2 verdict to Jourdanton.

They beat Natalia, 20-7, in their tourney opener.

Yesterday, the Uvalde 8-10 girls were to play Pleasanton in a tourney elimination game.

They lost a 19-8 verdict to Natalia in their tourney opener, but then beat Pearsall, 17-7, in an elimination contest.

The Uvalde Junior Division All-Stars will play either Natalia or Pleasanton in their first tourney game at 8 p.m. Saturday.
