COMMUNITY SPOTLIGHT: Reopening? Plans are moving forward

One of the hardest decisions that I’ve had to make was to close the Glen Carbon Library when COVID-19 first hit our region. Now, I’m finding that reopening is even harder. We’ve been planning the reopening since April, and the plans continue to evolve as we get closer to reopening. Every other time that the library has closed for an emergency, we’ve been able to go back to regular operations soon afterward. This situation is going to call for a very gradual opening to ensure that we can keep the library as safe as possible for our patrons and staff.

Our current plan is to reintroduce services as the state enters Phase 3 of the Governor’s Restore Illinois plan.

Currently, that means that we will begin accepting returned materials as early as Friday, May 29. I stress, currently. One issue that we are finding is that the science is changing day-to-day. With new information, our plans may also have to change and adapt.

We hope to move to curbside pickup in early June. At first, pickup will likely limit checkout to items that we hold as the statewide delivery system may not yet be running. We’ll be scheduling pickup times for people after their requests are ready.

One of the most critical aspects for everyone to remember is that there is no sure thing, and nobody knows what the future will hold. We are trying to do everything that we can to keep everyone safe while also offering at least some of the services that we are known for. I want to stress that, before you head over, to give us a call or check our website to see what is available. If you have any questions about the Glen Carbon Library’s services, please call 618-288-1212 and leave a voicemail message. We check the messages throughout the day, and someone will respond within 24 hours. You can also send us emails at This email address is being protected from spambots.
