Pot pie pick-up planned for Saturday - The Recorder

BERNARDSTON — Where there’s a will there’s a way, and the Bernardston Kiwanis Club has figured out a way to hold its monthly chicken pot pie dinner while also taking COVID-19

precautions.

Come 5 p.m. Saturday, the club is converting its regular dinner into a free drive-thru format at the United Church of Bernardston, allowing its members to comply with limitations on social gatherings while still giving back to the community in a time of need.

“Hopefully we can try to put a smile on people’s faces,” said Bernardston Kiwanis Club member Dan Devine. “This is just us trying to give back a little bit.”

The club received the United Church of Bernardston and town Board of Health’s blessings to pass out dinners in a drive-thru fashion. Normally, Devine said, drive-thru restaurants are not permitted in Bernardston based on the town’s zoning laws.

“We’ll see if we get in trouble,” he joked.

Starting at 5 p.m., Kiwanis Club volunteers will hand out roughly 150 hot to-go meals as people drive up, one or two cars at a time. The free meals will include chicken pot pie, squash, cranberry sauce and rolls. There will not be dessert or frozen chicken pot pies to take home this month.

“It will run as long as we have them or until they run out,” Devine noted.

Those coming to pick up a meal are advised to enter the church’s lower lot, and drive up one or two cars at a time. Club members will ask how many meals each car needs and pass them through the windows. Devine said the club plans to hold the drive-thru dinner rain or shine.

Those who can’t make it to the drive-thru may reach Joel Cole at 413-834-5484 to inquire about having a meal delivered. Devine said if people call before the event, members will put pies aside for delivery — within Bernardston town lines. Anyone delivering a meal would drop the food outside the front door, to avoid personal contact.
