An Independence Day tradition in Park Ridge is the Kiwanis Kiddie Parade, held around Hodges Park on the morning of Thursday, July 4.

The parade will start about 9:15 a.m. but those participating are asked to come to the front of City Hall, 505 Butler Place, by 9 a.m. for judging.

It’s a family event where the city’s children are escorted by their parents and cheered on by grandparents and friends.

For the past 65 years, what is now known as the “Noon” Kiwanis Club has invited local children, from preschoolers through eighth grade to decorate their favorite vehicles to and costume themselves.

The club gets help from the morning Kiwanis Club, a later addition to the city, and local volunteers.

This year’s parade will feature “Character Themes.” These could include movie favorites from “Frozen,” or the Minions, comic book heroes and heroines, or others.

Traditional July 4 décor in red, white and blue, flags and American themes are also welcome.

Tim Coyne from the Kiwanis can be reached for more information at 847-384-9209.

Judges will choose the best individual and best group entries, plus first, second and third place, in each of the following age groups: preschool and kindergarten; first and second grade; third and fourth grade; fifth and sixth grade; seventh and eighth grade.

During the parade, streets around Hodges Park (Vine, South Prospect, Courtland and Butler Place) will be closed to traffic.
