Walker City Council to hear about new playground for special-needs children

The Walker City Council will hear about efforts to secure a federal Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWFC) grant for a playground next to Challenger Field at its meeting at 6 p.m. Monday.

The city administration is looking at building the playground for special-needs children near the ball field dedicated to the same children with physical or mental challenges in Sidney Hutchinson Park.

Microbrewery receives unanimous approval of 'special use permit' from Planning and Zoning; measure heads to Council Tuesday night

Considering how much concern the idea of a microbrewery caused on social media in the days leading up the meeting, there wasn't much fight Monday night at Planning and Zoning.

In fact, the reviews from crowd members on an establishment that would serve craft beer in downtown Denham Springs were all positive.

The board voted 5-0 to recommend a 'special use permit' for Le Chien, a proposed microbrewery that will be located at 101 Hummell Street, just south of the railroad tracks in Denham Springs. The permit would allow the establishment to operate at a food-to-alcohol ratio less than what the city considers adequate for restaurants, which is 60-40.

Charlotte White can still see the tears running down the father’s cheek.

It was at Walker Freshman High about 10 years ago, when White organized the first-ever Special Teens Among Real Scenes (STARS) Prom for special needs students.

White and her small team “hardly had any money” for the endeavor, she said, but they did what they could. They shaped gold paper into stars and spray painted them silver, they blew up some balloons and hung them in various spots, and a few volunteers cooked and served the guests food.

Being the only male on the Denham Springs High School colorguard team — traditionally an all-girls squad — he thought the remarks might come. In fact, he expected they would.

Still, they hurt.

BASEBALL | Kinder wrestles momentum away from Doyle in fateful third inning of Class 2A state title game

Doyle baseball coach Tim Beatty said there are times where the first and last out of an inning can be the most difficult for a defensive team to achieve.

The Tigers found that out the hard way, something that will undoubtedly linger throughout the season, potentially carrying into next season.

Within the span of moments No. 2 Doyle watched a four-run lead evaporate when No. 5 Kinder erupted for eight runs in the top of the third inning, taking the lead for good en route to a 11-4 victory Monday in the Class 2A state championship game at McMurry Park.
