Division 20 meeting: Members attending were Frank Ferrich, Glen Fineman, Bruce Moulton and Rod Jones. An update was provided about the NE/IA District Foundation. Our “annual contribution” per member to the fund will be paid shortly. Members were encouraged to contribute to the Crossman fund to the foundation. The amount suggested is $500. The NE/IA district was 100 years old on January 6.

Nightwatch: Bruce Moulton and Frank Frerich provided meals to the Homeless with the Salvation Army Truck in good weather with a smaller turnout, typical for the beginning of the month. 2 Volunteers are needed for the food distribution on Monday, February 10.

Scholarships: Jack Jackson sent letters to the participating high school counselors inviting students to apply for 3 scholarships of $1,000 each, to be returned by March 4.

Drawing: Our speaker, Clair Duda, drew the Ace of Spades, not winning.

Happy Bucks: Sheriff Ralph Peppard collected many bucks, as we had no meetings for a couple of Wednesdays because of the Holidays.

Next Week’s Speaker: Vern Waldren will present a representative of the Douglas/Sarpy Extension Service to speak about nutrition, a timely subject at the beginning of the year.

Today’s Speaker: Vern Waldren again introduced Douglas County Commissioner Clair Duda, who gave an annual update about the condition of Douglas County. He specifically gave information about the planned extension of the court house, the associated problems, and the cost of law enforcement and jails. He stated that the average annual cost to house a youth in the jail including legal expenses amounts to about $238,000. More than 60% of the county budget goes into these areas.

Submitted by John Seigel with considerable notes taken by Joann Feller.
