100-year anniversary of Kiwanis Club of Omaha, Inc. formerly Downtown: Frank Frerick will e-mail an invitation for the January 23 event at 6 pm at Field Club. Members can make their own reservations or an interclub can be formed. Please coordinate with Frank.

Happy Bucks: Since we had a large event last week with not happy bucks, Ralph Peppard collected a lot of those.

Today’s Speaker: Ralph Peppard on behalf of Vern Waldren introduced Ralph’s neighbor Douglas County Commissioner and farmer Clair Duda, who has served on the county board for 26 years. Mr. Duda gave his “annual report of the state of the county”. He shared that about 65% of county expenditures now go to criminal justice compared with about 35 % when he first joined the county board. He elaborated on his frustrations with securing an agreeable location near the current court house to expand offices of the County Attorney, Public Defender and Juvenile Court. He also expressed his opinion that some funds the state is required to pay the county have not been forthcoming for several years. While he is not in favor of increasing taxes he explained the  need to float bonds for a major part of the new building, while a part of the project will come from private donations.
