Welcome to the Kiwanis Club of West Omaha
 
Founded in 1938 for Kiwanis Club of Greater Omaha and founded in 1961 for Kiwanis Club Westside which have merged together to form the Kiwanis Club of West Omaha. Each has a rich history of community service throughout the years. We are an eclectic mix of ages, genders, occupations, backgrounds and interests. We are all passionate about making our community and the world a better place for children so they can thrive. We are devoted to serving the children in our local community and also children all across the country and worldwide through unique and innovative service projects and fundraising initiatives. Members and invited guests meet each Monday at Noon for food, fellowship, and for the opportunity to hear from speakers about important matters in our region.

The meeting was opened with a prayer from Rich.  This was followed by the Pledge of Allegiance.

Kip led a business discussion:
Dale reported on Sacred Heart.  The readings should start September 12 and 26 at 2 PM.
Jack Jackson received a thank you card from Shelby Woodard, a scholarship recipient.
The next Flag Program placement is set for next Monday, September 1 Labor Day.  Please contact
Dennis if you can help.
The Installation Dinner is September 30 at the Champions Country Club.  
Joann reported that Sarah Ross had called about the club dues.  Joann told her that she was a 
"quasi-member" and dues are not required.
Vince confirmed that the Club Social Event was not a success.  May try again next year.
                   
Rod discussed Club Membership.  The Committee is developing a list, now at 30, of area 
businesses for membership canvassing.  Suggestions are welcome.
 
The guest speaker this week was Maggie Peterson from the Omaha Public Library.
 
There is no meeting next week, September 1.  The next scheduled meeting is Monday, September 8 at Legends.

Kip led a business discussion:
Vince confirmed that the Club Social Event will happen on August 23.  More information
is to follow but items updated included:
-  Food and drink to include chicken, beer, and soft drinks.
-  Time frame likely 5 PM to 8 PM.
-  Activities to include boat rides and possibly water skiing.  Also possible are horseshoes 
and bean bag toss if someone can bring these game supplies.
-  He has seating for around 30 but more lawn chairs is appreciated.
-  Location is his home in Ashland.  He will send map, gate code, etc.
                   
   Rod discussed Club Membership.  The Membership Committee met after last week's meeting.  
Discussion included canvassing area businesses close to Legends.  Possibly have a meeting 
date in October for potential new members.

-  Next two placement dates are Labor Day September 1 and September 11.
-  Still need placement and pickup volunteers for Labor Day.  Contact Dennis.

Inspections.
 
The next meeting is Monday, August 18 at Legends.  The scheduled Guest Speaker is Maggie Peterson

Frank led a business discussion:
Barb stated that last week she completed delivery of backpacks and supplies to Sacred Heart and 
Completely Kids.
Barb stated that in two weeks she will start ordering frozen meals for Ronald McDonald House.
 
Glen reported that he, Kip, Frank, and Steve attended the Division Meeting last week.
This was the last Division Meeting Joann would hold prior to the October 1 reorganization.  Since
the new organization will have Clubs in both Nebraska and Iowa, future meetings will happen
both via Zoom and at a new location.
 
Vince returned from his recent trip and confirmed that the Club Social Event will happen on August 23.
He will contact Kip to discuss timing, food, activities, etc.  Information emails to follow.
 
Rod discussed Club Membership.  The Membership Committee is to meet after today's meeting.  But
everyone should remember that gaining new members is something each of us needs to help with.
Stay ready to act and have a supply of business cards with you.
 
 The guest speaker this week was Club Member Glen Fineman who gave a talk on Mental Health.
 
The next meeting is Monday, August 11 at Legends.  The scheduled Guest Speaker is Jeremy Wallin
the Omaha Director of Lighting Inspections.

Barb gave an update on her activity with the Backpack Program:
She plans to deliver the backpacks and school supplies to Sacred Heart this week.
Also this week, a representative from Completely Kids will pickup from Barb backpacks 
and supplies.
 
The next Division Meeting is scheduled for 7 AM this coming Wednesday at First Watch on 72nd
and Pacific.
 
The Club Installation dinner is scheduled for September 30 at the Champions Country Club.
 
Vince has not returned from his current trip so the possible Club Social Event on August 23
is not yet confirmed.  More information expected soon.
 
Glen reminded everyone that July Service Hours are needed for his monthly report.
 
Both Joann and Glen attended the District Convention the past weekend.  Both stated
it was a good event.  Both had some brief comments.
Joann stated that the Nebraska Clubs gave more Mac & Cheese boxes that the Iowa
Clubs.   She will try to visit each of the 11 Clubs in the new October 1 reorganization
by Christmas.  
Glen stated that enjoyed the keynote speaker from Teammates.  He also attended a
membership seminar.
 
 The guest speaker this week was Katie Bassett with Meca who talked on the Riverfront
 projects.  Take time to visit - "theriverfrontomaha.com".

Two members from the Omaha Kiwanis Downtown Club - Jason Gregg and Chris Tucker.

Received a thank you card from the Assistance League for the recent donation.
Glen stated that he is to attend the District Convention this coming weekend.
Rod reminded everyone to always have the Club Business Cards and a short Club
talk ready.  Consider inviting people to the weekly meetings.
Barb talked about her recent activity with the Backpack Program:
She has completed purchase of the backpacks and school supplies.
A total of 64 backpacks with supplies with 32 each going to Sacred Heart and
Completely Kids.
Barb also stated that she will purchase frozen meals for the Ronald McDonald House
 Program.
     
The guest speaker this week was Tom Briese the Nebraska State Treasurer.
