ALBANY — The Kiwanis Club of Dougherty County Foundation presented $7,000 in scholarships to six area graduates during the club’s recent scholarship luncheon at the Hilton Garden Inn.

Receiving the awards were Emma Keaton, a student at Lee County High School; Michaela Hatcher, Westover High School; Allison Dunn, Southwest Georgia Home School Association; Sadie Baer, Southwest Georgia Home School Association; Sarah Norton, Deerfield-Windsor School, and Morgan Dasher, Deerfield-Windsor School.

The six seniors were among a field of 21 applicants who sought the scholarships. Foundation member Kristin Caso said that choosing the finalists was difficult because so many outstanding students applied.

Keaton, who received a $1,000 scholarship, said she plans to attend Duke University to earn a degree in art history and then pursue a doctorate in historic preservation. Hatcher also received $1,000 and said she plans to head to the University of Alabama to study aerospace engineering and astrophysics.

Dunn, Baer and Norton, all of whom were $1,000 scholarship recipients, also have made their college selections. Dunn said she is undecided for now on her major, but she will attend Brigham Young University. Baer has been accepted into the University of Tennessee, where she said she wants to double-major in digital studies, with an emphasis on cinema, and communications. Norton will attend the University of Georgia with the goal of eventually becoming a dentist.

Morgan Dasher was presented the club’s $2,000 Neff Scholarship, endowed by the family of the late Greg Neff for a student attending the University of Georgia. Upon completion of her degree at UGA, Dasher said she plans to pursue a master’s degree in nursing from Augusta University.

All of the students were selected for the Kiwanis honors based on excellence in academics, leadership skills, involvement in school and community activities, and financial need.
