About 200 people gathered last Thursday at First United Methodist Church in Martinsville, where the top 25 seniors from Martinsville High School (MHS) were the guests of honor.

The Martinsville Kiwanis Club has maintained the decades-long tradition of honoring MHS' seniors who have earned top grades throughout their high school career, putting them into the list of the top 25 academic performers, which represents about 6 percent of the total seniors.

During Thursday's Top 25 Recognition Banquet, guests were treated to the polished sounds of the Mprov MHS Jazz Choir led by Mark Yount.

The crowd then transitioned to the main sanctuary of the church, where Reporter-Times managing editor Stephen Crane served as the keynote speaker.

Each of the students then stood to be recognized for their achievement, taking the microphone and telling the crowd who they'd like to thank, along with the primary motivation that led them to maintain such high grades. Many spoke of the support of their families, as well as the friendly competition between their peers as a driving force.

The students then received handshakes and a pin from Kiwanis President Wayne Young and membership chair Rick McQueen.

This year's Top 25 MHS seniors include Sydney Baar, William Britt, Kiyoko Chandler, Elizabeth Chetham, Constance Giesbrecht, Hallie Griffin, Tanner Guerrettaz, Olivia Herbert, Trey Herrington, Phillip Hillman, Jarrett Hollett, Jaden Lester, Joseph McGuire, Elijah Mock, Makayla Murray, Patrick Nay, Emily Nesbit, Jackson Raventos, Lydia Rector, Jade Schubert, Heidi Silver, Alyssa Somerville, Allyson Staley, Alexandria Wilt, and Evan Wolfla.
