SPRING CREEK – The time of the year has arrived, the late-season push for teams and wrestlers trying to achieve success at the regional and state levels.

The Spring Creek wrestling team knows about regional and state championships, winning each last season, and the Spartans are ready to make another run – hosting the 25th annual Spring Kiwanis Invitational on Friday and Saturday.

Spring Creek is not the only team that has experienced major success last year that will compete in the Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational, far from it.

Spartans’ head coach Wade Pehrson said the top two teams from Idaho’s Division 4A and 5A classifications will be in Spring Creek.

The Spartans – the Minico Spartans – captured the Idaho 4A team championship, while the Columbia Wildcats topped the largest division in the state – claiming the 5A crown.

Battle Mountain, which earned the Nevada Division 2A state title, will be in attendance as well as the team the Longhorns beat, the Pershing County Mustangs – who finished as the runner-up to the state hardware.

Another team that nearly won a Nevada state championship is looking to increase its position this season by one spot, the Fallon Greenwave.

The Greenwave took second place to Spring Creek in the Division 3A, losing to Spring Creek by three points, 135-132, the title coming down to one match.

Graduated Sheldon Wilkinson’s 220-pound state championship over Fallon then-sophomore Ben Dooley in a 6-2 decision in the final served as the difference with the head-to-head swing.

The win was even more significant after considering Dooley defeated Wilkinson in the previous two meetings.

“We have to keep everyone healthy and away from injuries,” Pehrson said. “The sickness has been going around. I’m excited for the tournament. We have a lot of good teams, so the wrestling should be very good.”

In total, 29 teams are expected to compete in the 25th annual Spring Creek Kiwanis Invitational.

The action will kick off at 2 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m. Saturday at Spring Creek High School.
