Bill Kirby Jr.
L. Stacy Weaver Jr. got quite the surprise at a recent meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Fayetteville meeting, where he was presented with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine - the state's highest civilian recognition.
"I feel greatly honored," says Weaver, 82, who has distinguished himself as an attorney and humble champion of community service.
Weaver was club president in 1973 and has been recognized as a distinguished president by Kiwanis International. He received the 1982 E.J. Wells Cup award for his civic contributions.
His community involvement reads like a Who's Who, serving as president or chairman of such organizations as the Fayetteville Jaycees, the Fayetteville Civic Music Association, the Cumberland County Board of Social Services, the Arts Council of Fayetteville/Cumberland County, the Cumberland County Association for the Blind, the Olde Fayetteville Association, the Methodist University Foundation and the Fayetteville Technical Community College Foundation.
Other boards with Weaver's fingerprints include the Boys and Girls Club of Cumberland County, the Fayetteville YMCA and the Fayetteville/Cumberland County Chamber of Commerce.
"He is an amazing man who has been for decades the epitome of community stewardship and service in the fields of education, the arts, law and services for the most vulnerable in our state," said state Rep. Rick Glazier, who presented the award on behalf of Gov. Bev Perdue "We would be a far better state and society if all of us possessed the compassion, intellect and integrity of Stacy Weaver."
And just so you know the company Weaver keeps as the latest honoree, the order's lengthy roster includes the Rev. Billy Graham, Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King, William Friday and the late Charles Kuralt.
Matthew Wilson, 17, of Boy Scout Troop 61 in Lillington, received his Eagle Scout badge in a Jan. 29 ceremony at Lillington Church of God. Wilson attends Harnett Central High School.
