DOVEStaff WriterWILLIAMSON - “Terrific Kids is an elementary school program that recognizes and acknowledges children from grades K-5 who have excelled in a variety of ways,” said Williamson Kiwanis board member Judy Hambrick, speaking about an organization sponsored program that honors nominated students .“We get them pumped up – we get them excited and enthused about believing and achieving.”Traits looked for in a student when K-5 teachers from Riverside Elementary, Southside Elementary and the Williamson Christian are choosing their nominations include traits that begin with the letters that spell the word TERRIFIC: Thoughtful, Enthusiastic, Respectful, Responsible, Inclusive, Friendly, Inquisitive and Capable.“Each class nominates a pupil, and their prizes include a certificate and a goody bag,” said Hambrick. “The kids love it when we come and present these.”Terrific Kids is only one of many educational programs and events sponsored by the Williamson Kiwanis. The group consists of a number of local residents who are dedicated to supporting the needs of the youth, and who strive to honor their accomplishments.Kiwanis Vice–President Johnny Branch presided over the meeting held at the Starlight Restaurant on Monday evening, in the absence of President Darrin McCormick.Branch and several board members present discussed upcoming events that included the “Top of the Class” award banquet that honors top graduating scholars from Mingo, Pike and Martin Counties. Dates for the banquet are being considered and information will be provided at an upcoming meeting.Other subjects addressed were an ongoing project to complete repairs at the Williamson City swimming pool that include a new floor in the recreational facility, repairs or renovations to the privacy fence that surrounds the swimming area and redistributing and adding a ground-rubber product that is placed around the playground equipment where wood mulch was typically used in the past.Branch thanked the Daily News for attending their meeting, and said he is hopeful that positive publicity will bring awareness to the educational programs the Kiwanis support, and encourage growth and new membership.The Williamson Kiwanis meets each Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Starlight Restaurant inside the Sycamore Inn. The next scheduled meeting will be on Feb. 6.
